A group of burqa-clad Muslims recently entered a California, refused to order anything, and instead took up tables to prevent other paying customers from being seated. Eventually, police were forced to escort the unruly women out of the cafe, and they fired back by filing a racial discrimination lawsuit against the establishment. Unfortunately for them, however, the judge didn’t quite see things their way.
Sara Farsakh and her girlfriends slammed the Urth Caffé in a series of abusive rants that were published by Next Shark. Forsake and her friends claimed they were minding their own business when a “rude” waiter came over to them and ordered them to leave. She claims that she tried to explain to the waiter that they had finally just ordered food, but he wasn’t having any of it. It was then that police escorted them from the premises because of their religion.
“Urth Caffe’s expulsion of this group of women is a throwback to the days of ‘Whites only’ signs and colored water fountains, with Muslims now being the convenient targets of discrimination,” said Mohammad Tajsar, an attorney at Pasadena-based Hadsell Stormer & Renick LLP who is representing the women along with Gallinger Law. “Urth Caffé’s attempt to whitewash its upscale clientele by using its seating policy as a justification to expel those who outwardly appear Muslim is both immoral and illegal, and should have no place in Orange County’s diverse community.”
According to Mad World News, Urth Cafe has fired back by saying the women are lying, and they have filed a counter-lawsuit against the Muslims for fraud.
American Freedom Law Center co-founder David Yerushalmi is saying the women are not telling the truth, and that they violated a policy of the cafe’s that states that guests cannot exceed 45 minutes at a table without ordering during rush hours. The seven Muslims pulled together three tables on the front patio of the establishment, refusing requests from the staff to share one. When they still hadn’t ordered after 45 minutes, the staff asked them to leave, at which time they became belligerent.
The women claim the restaurant owners were discriminatory against them because they appear “outwardly” Muslim, but the manager has disputed this by revealing he is married to a Muslim woman named Jilla, who is actually the one who instructed him to call the police.
“We’re very sorry that [Farsakh] has this feeling that this was something racist but that is just not the case,” said owner Shallom Burkman, according to Laist, adding that he is Jewish and married to a Muslim woman, claiming that he and his wife are a “sign of world peace.”
Farsakh has refused to acknowledge that she was in the wrong, but we can only assume that a judge will soon be ruling against them. Nice try, ladies, but it looks like you picked the wrong restaurant to mess with!
