Hollywood is in mourning this week after Academy Award-nominated director Hector Babenco died of a heart attack on Wednesday. He was 70 years-old.
Babenco was nominated for Best Director for his 1985 low-budget hit Kiss of a Spiderwoman, which starred William Hurt and Raul Julia and told the story of two men sharing a jail cell in Argentina.
“These two people, in their confined environment, simply have to talk all the time,” Mr. Babenco said in an interview with The New York Times in 1984. “My task was to make it fresh and open, dynamic.”
Babenco also directed the 1987 hit Ironweed, which starred Meryl Streep, but he then returned to his roots by returning to directing lower budget, non-Hollywood films.
Rest in peace, Hector Babanco!
