Donald Trump and his supporters are celebrating this week after it was revealed on Saturday that for the first time in nearly a mo
nth, he is leading Hillary Clinton in a new poll.
Israel National News reported that Trump has been trailing Clinton in every poll since July, but he narrowly took the lead over her in a LA Times/USC Dornsife poll, published on Saturday. This same poll had him trailing her by 1% the day before.
This will come as welcome news to the newly-shaken up Trump campaign, but it remains to be seen whether it’s an outlier or the mark of another decisive reversal in the campaign.
Though Clinton was leading Trump by 7.9 points in the RealClearPolitics average of polls earlier this month, this lead has been cut down to 5.7 points.
This change came after Trump targeted minority voters by speaking to an African American audience in Michigan on Friday, where he decried the plight of inner-city blacks and blamed this on decades of failed Democratic policies.
“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs. Fifty-eight percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?” Trump said. “And at the end of four years, I guarantee you that I will get over 95 percent of the African-American vote. I promise you. Because I will produce. No group in America has been more harmed by Hillary Clinton’s policies than African-Americans. No group. No group.”
“If Hillary Clinton’s goal was to inflict pain on the African-American community, she could not have done a better job,” he added. “It’s a disgrace. Tonight, I’m asking for the vote of every single African-American citizen in this country who wants to see a better future.”
These efforts paid off, according to the LA Times poll. Last week, his support among blacks was in the low single digits, but on Saturday, it was at a whopping 13.6%. No Republican has topped 12% in the black vote since Ronald Reagan.
