Over the weekend, Hillary Clinton made headlines when she joined Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s movement to demand a recount in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Now, however, Clinton’s move has come back to bite her in a big way.
Daily Mail reported that an insider with Clinton’s team revealed on Monday that she believes Trump WILL indeed move forward with prosecuting the former Democratic presidential nominee, in large part due to the fact that she joined in calls for a recount. Neera Tanden, an advisor to Clinton the first time she ran for president, claimed Trump was “lying” when he said he would lock Clinton up during his campaign.
“Then, last week, he said he wasn’t going to prosecute her, and now he’s threatening to prosecute her if she takes part in a recount,” said Tanden, head of the liberal think tank Center for American Progress.
She then mocked Trump and his supporters for pushing back against the recount.
“If people have confidence in the election, then I don’t know what the worry is,” Tanden said. “If the Trump campaign thinks these numbers are accurate, president-elect Trump thinks these things are accurate, then I don’t know why he’s so anxious about it, why he needs to attack Hillary.”
Trump has not said publicly that he intends to prosecute Clinton for joining the recount movement. This came a day after White House chef of staff, Reince Priebus, told Fox that Trump is “not seeking methods and ways to persecute and prosecute Hillary Clinton.”
“I would suspect that President-elect Trump is going to be open to listening to” Congress and his attorney general, Priebus said, “but ultimately it’s going to be the DOJ’s call.”
