Millions of liberals were stunned last night when Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. Despite the fact that he had been working overtime for months to ensure that Trump lost, Barack Obama swallowed his pride minutes after the election ended by calling the future president and inviting him to the White House for a meeting.
Daily Mail reported that a White House spokesman said on Wednesday that the two men spoke over the phone and that Obama invited Trump to Washington D.C. on Thursday to discuss the transition of power. They reportedly spoke just after 4am this morning.
“Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the President identified at the beginning of the year and a meeting with the President-elect is the next step,” the White House said in a statement.
This followed a somber election night speech from Obama in which he told Americans, “No matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning.”
Obama is set to deliver a statement with Vice President Joe Biden at 12:15pm from the White House’s Brady Press Briefing Room.
Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway discussed the phone call between Obama and Trump during an appearance on the Today Show this morning.
“Well, it was a very warm conversation,” she said. “We were happy to receive the call from the President and they had a great, thorough conversation about Mr. Trump’s victory, he was congratulated, and I think they resolved to work together, which is exactly what this country needs – to get the current president and the president elect and others who are in leadership position to help unify and heal the country.”
“We expect that the two gentlemen will be meeting soon,” she added.
