Barack Hussein Obama may be in the final weeks of his presidency, but he’s making it clear that he’s planning to go out for a bang by hurting the United States as much as he can before he leaves office.
The Hill reported that this week, Obama made a sick move to ensure the U.S. will never be energy independent by banning offshore oil and gas drilling in most of the Arctic Ocean. With this move, Obama submitted to environmentalists who say the government needs to do more to prevent drilling in environmentally sensitive areas of U.S.-controlled oceans.
Obama defended his new ban by invoking a 1953 law governing the Outer Continental Shelf to block drilling in federal waters in the Arctic’s Chukchi Sea and most of its Beaufort Sea. White House officials said he also protected 21 underwater canyons in the Atlantic Ocean from drilling.
Obama’s White House added that Canada is blocking drilling in all of its Arctic Ocean acreage, a decision that they will review every five years.
“These actions, and Canada’s parallel actions, protect a sensitive and unique ecosystem that is unlike any other region on Earth,” Obama said in a statement. “They reflect the scientific assessment that, even with the high safety standards that both our countries have put in place, the risks of an oil spill in this region are significant and our ability to clean up from a spill in the region’s harsh conditions is limited.”
Obama is clearly just trying to cement his own legacy as an “environmentally conscious” president. SHARE this story if you can’t WAIT for him to leave the White House!
