In response to growing pressure from the Trump Administration, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez made the decision to require the county to implement all federal immigration detention requests.  This effectively revokes their status as a “sanctuary” for illegal immigrants.

According to the Miami Herald, the county had been refusing to indefinitely detain inmates wanted by ICE, not on principle, but because they were not fully reimbursed by the federal government for the expense.

Via the Herald:  “Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally.

“In light of the provisions of the Executive Order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,” Gimenez wrote Daniel Junior, the interim director of the corrections and rehabilitation department, in a brief, three-paragraph memo.”

President Trump took to Twitter to show his appreciation of this move by Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Unlike San Fransisco and other cities, Miami-Dade never actually branded itself a “sanctuary.”  The label was given to them by the Justice Department in a May 2016 report.

While it’s clear there will be some wrinkles that the local authorities in these cities will have to iron out in order to start complying with federal law, it’s nice to see our Commander in Chief keeping his campaign promises by enforcing policies that will improve the lives and safety of the American people.

Do you think Miami-Dade made the right decision? Let us know in the comments.
