Melania Trump got some very good news this week after her lawyers announced that the Maryland blogger who wrote an article containing unsubstantiated claims that she had once been an escort has been forced to pay a “substantial sum” to the First Lady as part of their settlement in the defamation suit.
“I posted an article on August 2, 2016 about Melania Trump that was replete with false and defamatory statements about her,” Webster Tarpley, the 71-year-old blogger, said in a statement released by Melania’s attorneys, according to The Washington Post.
“I acknowledge that these false statements were very harmful and hurtful to Mrs. Trump and her family, and therefore I sincerely apologize to Mrs. Trump, her son, her husband and her parents for making these false statements,” Tarpley added in comments released by Melania’s legal team.
Fox News reported that Melania re-filed a libel lawsuit on Monday against the corporation behind Daily Mail, which also reported on the escort rumors. In the new filing, her lawyers argued that the unsubstantiated claims damaged her ability to profit off her high profile.
The new filing stated that Melania, “had the unique, one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person, as well as a former professional model, brand spokesperson and successful businesswoman, to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multimillion-dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which Plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world.”
