Donald Trump unloaded on Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in a conference call threatening to send U.S. troops to stop “bad hombres down there” unless the Mexican military gets control of itself again.
The excerpt from the Friday morning call did not include any context of the remark and also did not include Nieto’s response.
“You have a bunch of bad hombres down there,” Trump told the Mexican president, according to Daily Mail. “You aren’t doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn’t, so I just might send them down to take care of it.”
The excerpt was given to the Associated press by a person who had access to the transcript. The source gave it on condition of anonymity because the Trump administration had not made the call public.
On Tuesday, the Mexican website Aristegui Noticias published an account of the excerpt and described it as Trump humiliating Nieto in a confrontational exchange. Mexico’s foreign relations department denied this, saying it “is based on absolute falsehoods” and that the excerpt given to the associated press was taken out of context.
“The assertions that you make about said conversation do not correspond to the reality of it,” the statement said. “The tone was constructive and it was agreed by the presidents to continue working and that the teams will continue to meet frequently to construct an agreement that is positive for Mexico and for the United States.”
